The first ever Multicultural Health Workers(MHW) National Gathering brought together 40 MHWs from 14 organizations and six Canadian provinces. The Gathering was hosted by the Umbrella Multicultural Health Coop in partnership with the Community Health Workers Network of Canada (CHWN), with the generous support of Lawson Foundation and Vancity. The event was held at Springbrooke Retreat and Conference Centre in Langley, BC in June 2018.

The keynote speech by Yvonne Chiu, from the Multicultural Health Brokers Cooperative in Edmonton, set the tone for the Gathering as a space to acknowledge the shared experience of MHWs and to catalyze collective action toward health equity and social justice. She introduced a concept central to the work of all MHWs: cultural brokering.

Each MHW had an active role in facilitating and contributing to the learning that took place. They presented workshops, conversation cafes, individual presentations and panel discussions. The three-day Gathering focused on defining the role of MHWs, strengths and challenges of the role, the practice of cultural brokering, and potential next steps to garner support for MHWs.

On day 2, we shared a social evening with food, music and dancing. Mexico Vivo dancing group shared a traditional Mexican dance, and opened the space for socializing, laughter and fun.
