Community Health Worker (CHW) is a term used to describe many types of worker, such as cultural resource facilitators, community health brokers, multicultural health navigators, community navigators, cross-cultural health promoters/promotoras de salud, community outreach workers, peer educators, multicultural health brokers, cross cultural health brokers, peer leaders, diversity liaison workers and lay health educators.
CHWs perform different functions or have different responsibilities depending on where they are and which populations they serve. What all CHWs have in common is that they intervene to create 'bridges' between vulnerable populations and mainstream health and social services and promote health and wellbeing.
